Our Expert Team at Croft Surveyors

Croft Surveyors grew out of a multi-disciplinary south-west surveying firm, having identified the opportunities available for a pure Building Surveying company in the south-west, utilising the many years (decades) of contacts built up by Peter Croft in Exeter, Tony German in South Devon and David Vestey in Taunton.

Our aim is to be the go-to building surveyors for the local business. We expect to give the best advice but with a local presence; our flat management system allowing all of us to work with our clients directly.

David Vestey - Director, Taunton

David studied Building Surveying at the University of Reading, graduating in the ‘90s recession but eventually gaining experience with a Government agency and a national surveying firm, before finding his niche in smaller private practice. David trained in Bristol and Bath, specialising in historic buildings. Now his work is mostly “building pathology” (diagnosing defects) which tends to lead on to projects to remedy the defects, dilapidations, party walls and “expert” work with reports on poor quality building work and boundary disputes.

David runs a bit, cycles (gently) and plays drums in the Taunton “Big Noise” street band at his local church where he is also a youth group leader.

Tony German - Director, Torquay

Tony studied building surveying at the University of Reading, graduating in the late 1990s. He trained to become Chartered in a private practice in London, prior to moving back to the Westcountry to further his career. Tony has experience in both commercial and residential property and his work mostly involves Contract Administration, Project Management, Building Pathology and Defect Diagnosis.

In his spare time, Tony enjoys playing golf and watching his local football team.  He also regularly acts as a taxi driver to his children and family!

Nick Burrows - Totnes

After gaining a first-class degree in building surveying from Plymouth University Nick qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 2007 and now heads up the Totnes office. Nick specialises in pre-acquisition surveys, building pathology, Party Wall disputes, and the odd bit of architectural design.

In his spare time Nick can usually be found on a bicycle, roaming the highways and byways of Devon.

Colin Wooding - Exeter

Colin studied Building Surveying at Liverpool Polytechnic, now John Moore University.  He then had something of a twin track career, training and qualifying as a Chartered Loss Adjuster, before coming back into the fold as a Chartered Building Surveyor.  He works from our Exeter office but travels as necessary!  He specialises in pre-acquisition surveys, building pathology and insurance related work including Reinstatement Cost Assessments.

Colin plays (bass) in a rock and blues band but is also learning drums.  As with most Croft Surveyors, he is also a cyclist.

Mike Walsh - Taunton

Mike graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying at the University of West of England (UWE) in 2016 and became chartered in 2018. Mike then joined Croft Surveyors in 2021 where he specialises primarily in the Design, Procurement, Contract administration, and Project Management of various commercial and residential projects ranging from small extensions to large commercial office refurbishment, complex repair and refurbishment projects to a variety of building types including Listed Buildings, and new build developments. Alongside his primary work area Mike also undertakes a full range of general building surveying services, specifically: Dilapidations Advice, preparation and submission of Planning and Listed Building Consent Applications, and Party Wall services.

Outside of work Mike can typically be found on (or falling off of) a bicycle of some kind or enjoying time with his young family… and by that he means getting limited sleep and being grateful for it.

Simon has experience in both commercial and residential property and specialises in pre-acquisition surveys, dilapidations and Contract Administration.

Robin spends most of his leisure time having fun with his partner and young kids, but during a spare minute also enjoys playing guitar, kitesurfing and keeping fit in the gym.

Martin started training as a building surveyor in 2015 and graduated from the University of the West of England in 2017, gaining his Chartership in 2024.  Martins work is mostly design and specification (both commercial and residential), which leads to planning advice and building regulations.  Martin also works with defect diagnosis and dilapidations, and his specialism is with structural appraisals of buildings prior to their conversion.  Martin is developing his expertise, working with listed buildings and intends to complete the RICS Building Conservation Accreditation.

Martin enjoys cycling and typically cycles in a group each Sunday.  He also usually has a DIY project on the go.

Peter Croft - Consultant, Exeter

After four years working in the construction industry Peter attended Leicester Polytechnic. He graduated in 1981 with a degree in Building Surveying and Chartered in 1983. After forty years of an interesting and enjoyable career in the profession he decided to slow down and semi-retire. He has stepped back from the management side and returned as a consultant to his roots of Building Pathology and later interest in Party Wall matters.

Semi-retirement gives Peter the opportunity for frequent holidays with his wife and to spend time with their grandchildren. He also undertakes volunteer work for a number of organisations and likes to cycle, walk and ski for fitness and fun.
